Marmara Sea-Friendly Industry Accord

In scientific modeling, it is possible to observe recovery and an increase in oxygen levels in the Sea of Marmara within 5-6 years if waste is reduced by 50%. With an integrated, applicable action plan for the Sea of Marmara, we can return to normal conditions."
Prof. Dr. Mustafa YÜCEL

Today, we all have an impact on the intense pollution in the Sea of Marmara. This pollution manifested itself as mucilage in 2021. Intensively formed mucilage disrupts the connection of the sea with the atmosphere, disturbing the carbon cycle, and consequently reducing the oxygen levels in the sea. Mucilage, like a veil, negatively affects the life of relatively immobile organisms (seagrasses, mussels, sponges, etc.).

In addition to its effects on the marine ecosystem and biodiversity, mucilage and marine pollution also affect productive sectors.

  • In systems that use cooling water (ship and industrial production filters), the sea water taken is dirty and clogs the filters. Especially restaurants, green areas, cafes, and various businesses located along the coastal strip of the Marmara Region are affected by pollution.

Freshwater sources (rivers, streams, and lakes) are directly connected to the Sea of Marmara. Industrial treatment waters and agricultural inputs discharged into these sources are dumped into the sea. The current state of the Sea of Marmara becoming unable to clean itself will also affect freshwater sources in the long run. Our industry is gaining momentum every day in transitioning to a circular and green economy. Studies are ongoing on carbon regulation mechanisms, voluntary carbon markets, sustainable finance, and the transition of all processes to circular economy models.
